overlapping basic service Set (OBSS): A basic service set (BSS) operating on the same channel as the station’s (STA’s) BSS and within (either partly or wholly) its basic service area (BSA).
802.11-2020, Clause 3
IEEE 802.11ax, and its associated Wi-Fi Alliance certification, Wi-Fi6, paved the way for the improvements made possible with 802.11be. At its heart, 802.11ax aims at improving Wi-Fi performance in hyper-density scenarios, where many STAs compete for airtime. By allowing multiple concurrent uplink transmissions, and by designing a denser, yet more efficient carrier structure, 802.11ax ensured that throughput could increase, even in these high-density scenarios.
