Synopsis

Add a DHCP server, activate a scope, authorize a DHCP server, create a reservation, create and modify a scope (ordinary, multicast, and superscope), display DHCP statistics, display active leases, install the DHCP Server service, pause or stop a DHCP server, reconcile a scope, and specify scope options, user classes, and vendor classes.

Procedures

You perform most DHCP procedures using the DHCP console, which is accessed using:

Start Programs Administrative Tools DHCP

The following procedures assume that the DHCP console is already open. For more information on DHCP concepts and terminology, see DHCP.

Tip

You can also manage many aspects of DHCP servers from the command line using the netsh (Netshell) command. See netsh in Chapter 7, for more information.

Add a DHCP Server

Right-click on root (DHCP) node in console tree Add Server Browse select computer OK

This adds a DHCP server to the DHCP console so you can manage it. You can delete a server from the console by selecting Delete from the shortcut menu.

Activate (or Deactivate) a Scope

Right-click on Scope node {Activate | Deactivate}

Only an activated scope responds to DHCP lease and renewal requests from client computers. Activation allows you to selectively control which scopes are available on a DHCP server.

It is recommended that you do not deactivate a scope unless you intend to retire and delete it from the server. This is because a DHCP server whose scope is deactivated will send out DHCPNAK packets ...
