Updating Your Software

Using the most up-to-date software can make a big difference in how well your system runs. Software manufacturers occasionally release software patches that improve the stability or features of their software; Microsoft releases Service Packs and Security Updates that improve Windows; hardware manufacturers release new drivers; and virus prevention programs periodically require updates that protect you from new viruses. Use the following sections to keep your software up-to-date.

Windows Update is the one-stop shop for updates to Windows 2000. Like the Windows Update feature in Windows 98, Windows Update is a Web site that offers updates to the Windows 2000 operating system and related programs, such as Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger. However, Windows Update for Windows 2000 goes a step farther: It also offers certified updated drivers for various hardware components.
