Worldwide Windows: Customizing the Regional Settings

If you'll be writing documents to send to foreign countries, you need to tailor certain aspects of your writing for your readership. For example, if you'll be using foreign currency amounts, not only will you need to use the appropriate currency symbol, but you also will want to place the symbol in the correct position relative to the amount. In Germany, for example, the deutsche mark symbol (DM) is placed after the amount (for example, 5,000 DM). Similarly, date formats are different around the world. In the United States, for example, 12/11/98 means December 11, 1998; in Great Britain, however, 12/11/98 is interpreted as the 12th of November, 1998.
