You can use Windows 7's new Device Stage feature to configure device settings, as well as run common device tasks.
In previous versions of Windows, interacting with a device usually meant interacting with several different Windows features. For a document scanner, for example, you might use Windows Fax and Scan to run a scan, Device Manager to change the scanner's properties, and perhaps a proprietary program to configure features such as scan profiles.
