Ongoing Maintenance
WINS servers require some ongoing maintenance. Specifically, you should regularly back up the WINS server database (which probably happens automatically as part of your regular server backup process). To optimize performance, you should regularly compact the WINS database and perform consistency checking. To monitor a WINS server, you can use the WINS console or the Performance Monitor console. Additionally, you might need to add or remove WINS records as part of your maintenance. The sections that follow describe each of these tasks in more detail.
