TCP Connection Termination

Just as the TCP connection establishment process requires the sending of a SYN segment and its acknowledgment, the TCP connection termination process requires the sending of a FIN (Finish) segment, a TCP segment in which the FIN flag is set, and its acknowledgment. The FIN segment indicates that the FIN segment sender will send no more data on the connection. Because a TCP connection is made of two logical pipes (an outbound and inbound pipe for each TCP peer), both pipes must be closed and the closure must be acknowledged. Figure 11-5 shows a TCP connection termination.
