Long awaited, Windows PowerShell is a new Windows command-line shell that includes an interactive prompt and a scripting environment that can be used separately or in combination. Windows PowerShell introduces the concept of a cmdlet (pronounced "command-let"), a simple, single-function, command-line tool built into the shell. Each cmdlet can be used separately, but their strength lies in using them in combination. Windows PowerShell includes more than one hundred basic core cmdlets that you can combine to automate complex tasks. You can even write your own cmdlets for even more customized scripts.
PowerShell and its permutations are covered in Chapter 15.
