Preparing Domains and Computers

Before you can upgrade a domain controller to Windows Server 2008, you should follow the steps detailed in the Active Directory section earlier in this chapter to prepare the forest and domain to accept a Windows Server 2008 domain controller. If you are only upgrading to Windows Server 2008 on a member server—or are upgrading a stand-alone server—you don’t need to prepare the domain. However, it’s useful to note that upgrading the forest and domain well before you actually install a Windows Server 2008 domain controller causes no issues.
