The procedure for troubleshooting printing problems, as in troubleshooting any type of problem, is first to isolate and identify the problem and then to determine a course of action to fix it. This section helps you diagnose printer problems, helps you locate the printing subsystem where the error is occurring, and provides some specific suggestions for solving the problem.

Starting at the Server

Printing problems usually fall into one of the following categories:

Physical problems

Includes problems with the actual printer and connections. This includes paper jams, low toner or ink, and so forth.

Print server problems

Includes problems with printer drivers, permissions levels, and software status.
