HPC Clusters

An additional type of clustering is high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, also called compute clusters. Unlike NLB or Failover clusters, HPC clusters are not designed to provide high-availability for critical applications, but rather to distribute highly parallel and complex computing tasks across multiple nodes. Windows HPC Server 2008, and its predecessor Windows Compute Cluster Server (CCS), enable super-computer functionality from the desktop to the enterprise.

Windows HPC Server is a combination of Windows Server 2008 and a package of interfaces, management tools, and utilities known as the Microsoft HPC Pack 2008. The HPC Pack is available separately and can be installed on any x64 version of Windows Server 2008.
