The Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Architecture

This section briefly introduces the internal structure of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. The chapters in the later sections of this book will expand on this information.

Server Components

At the highest level, the design of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 involves two components:

  • A front-end communication service (Web server). This must be Internet Information Services 6.0 (IIS6) at a minimum. The front-end Web server receives and renders the requested information. If a server-farm topology exists, it is possible to load balance the front-end Web servers for performance, disaster recovery, or other related scenarios.
