While the desktop remains a battlefield for bus designers, notebook computer–makers have selected a single standard to rally around: PC Card, promulgated by the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA). Moreover, the PC Card bus is flexible and cooperative. Because it is operating system and device independent, you can plug the same PC Card peripheral into a computer, Mac, Newton, or whatever the next generation holds in store. The PC Card expansion system can cohabitate in a computer with a desktop bus such as ISA or PCI.
