Newly emerging smartphones differed from their predecessors because they bristled with features and functions such as an array of sensors including an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a compass, a proximity sensor, a thermometer, GPS for accurate location, distance, and speed traveled, as well as a flashlight, camera, a microphone, barcode/QR code readers, and a video/voice recorder. Indeed, later models added even more functions such as a pedometer, a barometer, a heart-rate sensor, as well as fingerprint and face recognition functions (and in one vendor’s phone, a Geiger counter).
