Smartphones are set to become a useful device for law enforcement. Here, the goal is not to fingerprint the device, but to use the device to fingerprint a person. This will be done by providing police officers with a mobile system—a smartphone and a direct broadband connection—for scanning and processing fingerprints on the street. This allows police officers to be more productive by fingerprinting suspects in the field. The NYPD invested around $160 million in such a system, which it paid for using funds received in bank settlements.
