5Wireless Payment and Access Systems

5.1 Overview

This chapter outlines the current most relevant solutions for mobile payment and access control. As a base, the wireless security technologies detailed previously are discussed specifically from a payment and access point of view, followed by the description of NFC and other wireless techniques. Then, the EMVCo concept and other banking systems are discussed along with selected use cases such as e‐commerce (Wallet solutions, Apple Pay), transport (MiFare, Cipurse) and access systems (access security classifications, solutions).

The mobile payment environment is developing strongly at the moment. Commercial markets are considering many mobile wallet solutions based on NFC, tokenization or HCE. Some examples of mobile payment can be found in Refs. [10,11]. Also, biometrics is becoming more relevant for providing additional security for payments, including fingerprint and eye iris based biometrics for mobile app authentication. The eye iris authentication discussed in this chapter is based on Eyeprint ID, which has been developed by US‐based EyeVerify and AirWatch [9,12].

5.2 Wireless Connectivity as a Base for Payment and Access

Payment and access systems may rely technically on any known connectivity technology. One logical solution is NFC which is designed for providing very short distance two‐way radio communications between devices such as a smartphone and NFC reader. Other typical solutions are based on RFID. Barcodes as such ...
