We recall from Figure 1.1 in Chapter 1 that, when studying wireless networks, we will not take the links as given bit carriers but will be concerned with the sharing of the wireless spectrum resource as well. The strictly layered approach would view the wireless physical layer as providing a bit carrier service to the link layer. The link layer just offers packets to the physical layer, which does the best it can.
