Wireshark was built during the late 1990s. Gerald Combs, a young college graduate from Kansas City, developed Ethereal (the basic version of Wireshark), and by the time Combs developed this awesome invention, he had landed himself a job. After a few years of service, Combs decided to quit his job and pursue his dreams by developing Ethereal further. Unfortunately, as per the legal terms, Combs' invention was part of the company's proprietary software.
