Challenges to sexism and discrimination
Women have pushed for a variety of changes in journalism and in news organizations: they have demanded more news about women, different kinds of news about women and even different ways of writing about women. Women journalists have argued for the recruitment of more women, for pay equity and for greater access to the upper reaches of news organizations’ hierarchies, as well as for better treatment of women in journalism education and training programmes. Some of the issues are relatively minor but symbolic. For example, May Craig, the Washington correspondent and panellist on the TV programme, Meet the Press, led a protracted battle in 1945 to get a women's restroom near the Congressional press galleries. ...
