Spelling in English really wasn’t a thing until Noah Webster published his dictionary. Suddenly, busybodies had another reason to criticize you: Your spelling wasn’t up to Webster’s standard. And though Mark Twain wrote that he pitied the man who knew only one way to spell a word, Webster has prevailed. Spelling matters. Grammar does, too.
