At the atomic level, the most basic element you can format in a document is text — letters, numbers, and characters. You can format text to be bold, underlined, italicized, small or large, in different fonts or colors, and with all sorts of pretty and distracting attributes. Word gives you a magnificent amount of control over the appearance of your text.
