Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a very big topic on the Web—and even in society as a whole. People find more and more of their information by typing keywords into search engines and clicking on interesting-looking search results. Businesspeople “game” search engine results to try to get more prominence for their products and services. This can include creating fake or dummy pages; paying for mentions of their products on what seem like neutral, content-oriented sites; and performing many more tricks.
Governments have even gotten into the game. Authoritarian governments block or divert some search terms to try to keep certain kinds of news from reaching people.
