Any journey, and especially those that are remarkable, is founded in a combination of both embarking on a planned direction and the serendipity of stumbling across the unplanned along the way. When the unplanned happens and the unknown path is trodden, you have a chance to check back in and reorientate the pathway forward. Are you and your team way off base? Or is the new direction where you want to be? How do you reconnect with a sense of progress rather than meandering?
To keep progressing, you need a charted course of direction or a map to come back to. It is this touchstone that becomes a shared reference point for intrepid travellers to gather around, share stories and plan for the next move.
When it comes to charting the course for work from anywhere (WFA), a number of models (maps, if you like) are useful reference points. In this chapter, we unpack one such model shared by an organisation that has been working in a distributed fashion globally since 2005. We also give you the opportunity to start to craft the map for you, your team and your organisation that turns your WFA philosophy into a pathway for action, maintaining a focus on performance, culture and autonomy.
