Building confidence involves not only believing in yourself, which I covered in Chapter 3, and overcoming self-consciousness and performance anxiety, covered in Chapter 4. It also requires you to overcome your fear of success—which I’ll discuss in this chapter.
WHY WOULD ANYONE FEAR SUCCESS? (AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT)
The fear of coming up short, even after giving our best effort, causes us to shrink and unconsciously hold back out of fear that our full game wouldn’t be enough. The existence of a fear of failure eventually creates the exact failure we fear. Maybe you don’t have that problem—but you’re still not getting all of your game out there. Could you be unconsciously afraid that you might actually succeed?
