Jack hung up the phone and let out a long cleansing breath. He’d been caught completely off-guard by the CEO’s phone call. The call had started with dread, but ended on a high note. Thinking back to the first time he’d been called to Mr. Franklin’s office, he realized that by the grace of God, he’d been spared.

Jack had barely put the receiver in its cradle when the phone rang again. This call was from Don.

Upset and not wanting to waste a word on pleasantries, Don jumped right in. “Jack, what were you thinking? Why would you ever consider reducing headcount after a Kaizen event?”
