Patty had insisted that he bring nothing to supper. “Not even flowers or a bottle of wine,” she’d stated emphatically.

Tim felt awkward showing up without anything, so he arrived with a small balsawood airplane for Scott. He had hoped the two of them could play either before or after supper. He needn’t have bothered, though.

“Scott’s at his friends for the evening,” Patty told him. She’d spied the small gift in Tim’s hand. “I thought it would be better if this evening was just between the two of us. No need to complicate his life. Still, that was very sweet of you,” she said.
