This is a very short chapter, by far the shortest in the book, not because there is little to say on the subject but because the chapters on feature writing, writing online and style cover the important points and there is no need to repeat them here. However, there are one or two things to emphasise.

The general advice on how to write good features copy applies with particular force to columns and blogs1. The more you expect the reader to choose your piece rather than the one next to it or after it – on the grounds that it’s more interesting to read – the more you need a distinctive style and the harder you may have to work to achieve it.
