English usage and writing style
The best-known book on how to write good English, avoiding howlers, exists in four editions. The first one, A Dictionary of Modern English, edited by Henry (H W) Fowler, was published in 1926, and the second, edited by Ernest Gowers, in 1965. The third and fourth, edited by Robert Burchfield and Jeremy Butterfield respectively, are included in the list below.
