Chat and Instant Messaging

In the previous chapter, we saw that e-mail has already become a ubiquitous mode of communication in the workplace. In this chapter, we explore another mode that is on its way to becoming similarly prevalent: instant messaging (IM), also referred to as chat.

Nowadays people in professional environments can choose from a wide array of communication media, several of which include voice or video streaming. Interestingly, though, despite the availability of these richer channels, the use of text-based IM is on the rise.
