In this first part of the book, the basic overview of the cognitive approach and the lesson development model used throughout the book are introduced. Chapter 1 describes why the cognitive approach to instructional design is important, how learning occurs according to the cognitive point of view, and the different categories of learning according to cognitive psychology.
Chapter 2 lays out an introduction to the seventeen elements of the lesson development model in both narrative and tabular form. This model serves as the basis for the "how to" chapters in Part II.
