The standards of documents for EDI were firstly developed by large business houses during the 1970s,
and are now under the control of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
As we have noted, EDI demands two things.
• One is a set of software programs at each user or partner’s site to convert the documents from
their own formats to the standard ones and also from the standard formats to their own formats,
which they understand. These are required because any partner could send or receive documents at
different times.
