You're probably somewhat familiar with the history of XML and its association with earlier information technologies, such as SGML. However, I thought it might be helpful to quickly trace the origins of XML to put the technology into perspective. Also, it will help give you an understanding about how the folks who created XML viewed the state of the Web, which in many ways was different than the view of the vast majority of Web users. The creators of XML viewed the Web as an unstructured data repository begging to be organized, which got them thinking about how to add context and give more structure to information on the Web.
