Fishers and fishing vessel operators catch and trap fish and seafood for restaurants and grocery stores. The boat’s captain oversees the fishing, hires crew members, and arranges for the day’s catch to be sold. The first mate is the captain’s assistant and is in charge when the captain is not on duty. The boatswain helps the captain oversee the deckhands, who carry out the sailing and fishing operations. These workers may spend weeks or months at sea. The work is hard and sometimes dangerous, and employment can be seasonal.
