Like the figure, a landscape is made of shapes of value. Squint and you will see that a tree's foliage can be broken down into irregular shapes of lighter and darker values. The telling details of leaves and branches occur at the edges of these shapes. And, just like the figure, the complexity of a landscape can be conquered by drawing one shape at a time, each one in relation to the last.
