Capturing an edge WITH CONTOUR LINE

There are two ways to define the edge of any form: with value changes or with line. Whenever you create a drawing that utilizes both line and value, you will have to decide which will be dominant. I am primarily a value artist, but I love the beautiful linework of such masters as Rico Lebrun and Katsushika Hokusai. I utilize contour drawing in two instances: to define some of the edges where figure and ground are the same value, and when I don't have time for a complete value drawing of a scene — in which case, I do a contour line drawing of all the shapes involved and fill in the values later. The most difficult part is knowing when to stop. I could use someone to snatch my pencil away.
