Know Why Half the Work Gets Done in Twice the Time
The research discussed so far does a good job of quantifying technical debt’s general impact. However, even if a hypothetical business manager knows that their industry throws away half of their developers’ time, those numbers aren’t actionable since a) they don’t know what their own waste is, b) they cannot see the future risks, and c) they have no way of measuring it even if they wanted to. Hence, technical debt won’t be an immediate concern until they feel the pain, similar to when the doctor tells you to eat more vegetables, cut down on the wine, and get some exercise—hyperbolic discounting deluxe.
