USB/FireWire

A lot of sound cards now operate using USB or FireWire. FireWire was originally a Mac thing, and USB was originally a PC thing, but nowadays you can get either type installed in either computer. Every computer has a limited number of USB or FireWire inputs, but this has nothing to do with the load on the computer itself. Pro sound cards pull a lot of juice from a computer’s hub. This means that if you’re trying to run several USB/FireWire devices at once, all from the same computer, you may be asking for trouble.

I simply don’t recommend running more than one or two of these devices at once, but if it is absolutely necessary, it’s better to have an additional USB/FireWire hub installed through a PCI slot on your motherboard. This ...
