One of the more creative elements of mixing is adding special effects to audio tracks. Adding the right reverb to a vocal can really bring out its warmth and special characteristics. Adding a little delay to a guitar solo can make it sound larger than life. Adding some chorus to a bass can give it a much richer and fuller sound.
