Black really is beautiful when it comes to staving off ageing. The darker the pigment – think plums, prunes, bilberries, blackberries, dates and raisins – the more powerful a food is at mopping up free radicals. It’s thought the pigment is a rich source of antioxidants. To maximise the benefits, wash rather than peel the skins of fruits and veg – the pigment is often concentrated in the skin or outer leaves. Try to eat a dark red, purple or black fruit or vegetable every day. And if you love wine, go for deep reds – they contain the most antioxidants.
