bodhisattva The Buddhist ideal of a being who diligently cultivates his or her own discipline and wisdom in order to attain enlightenment, but who also has great compassion for all living beings and works for their happiness as well. The bodhisattva is not satisfied with his or her own attainment of peace and liberation, but only accepts the reward of final nirvana once all other beings are also freed.
