  • Find out how to configure Linux clients to connect to, and login to, a FreeIPA Linux server.
  • Increase your knowledge of how to work with Linux.

This live event is for you because…

  • You are an aspiring Linux administrator/systems administrator.
  • You want to learn more about FreeIPA.
  • You wish to increase your overall knowledge of the Linux operating system.

Prerequisites

  • Basic understanding of how to download and install a Linux OS into a virtual machine. Fedora Server example
  • Know how to setup a virtualization platform such as VirtualBox (or other favorite program)
  • Ability to work with a Linux editor: vim, nano, etc... (the instructor will focus on vim). Vim example

Course Set-up

  • A virtualization platform of your choice. For example, VirtualBox, VMware Workstation, KVM, and so on. It is recommended that you utilize NAT mode and not bridged mode. If using VirtualBox, select “NAT Network” for your virtual machine networking connectivity.
  • Two virtual machines installed with Fedora Server and Fedora Workstation.

Recommended Preparation

  • In addition to setting up your virtual environment and Linux systems as outlined in Course Setup, watch Lessons 1 through 3 of Linux Fundamentals by Sander van Vugt.

Segment 1: Directory Services 101 (20 minutes)

  • Theory: What is directory services?
  • Examples of systems running directory services

Segment 2: Installation of Directory Services (60 minutes)

  • Preparing the server
  • Downloading and installing directory services software
  • Setting up the directory server
  • Configuring the DS server to work with DNS
  • Testing the server

10 minute break

Segment 3: Configuration of Directory Services (60 minutes)

  • Setting up user and computer accounts
  • Working with groups and Ous
  • Working with policies
  • Using cockpit to configure DS

10 minute break

Segment 4: Connecting Clients (45 minutes)

  • Connecting client systems to the directory server
  • Setting up user accounts on the client and logging in

Segment 5: Final Analysis and Q&A (15 minutes)

  • Analysis of the server and client
  • Q&A
