In fact, more than half of your performance relates to your level of emotional intelligence. In this enlightening and practical three-hour course, Jennifer Stine shows you how the four emotional intelligence competencies—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management—can improve your performance as a manager. Jennifer leads a deep dive into how emotional intelligence helps you practice six main leadership styles (coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting, and coaching) and explains when to apply each, along with their respective advantages and disadvantages. Leadership styles focused on emotional intelligence positively affect the climate of your group, which in turn can lead to measurable impact on financial results in everything from sales and revenue growth to efficiency and profitability. About your instructor
Jennifer (Jenny) Stine has been teaching organizational behavior, teamwork, and leadership for close to a decade. Her teaching experience includes a master’s level organizational behavior course at Harvard Extension and short professional development courses in leadership and teamwork at Harvard’s Division of Continuing Education. Jenny has also practiced these skills in senior-level leadership roles, including at MIT, where she was the founding director of the Professional Education Office; at Harvard, where she led executive education for the Graduate School of Education; and as a learning and development consultant for industry, including ongoing work at Accenture. She holds a PhD from Stanford.

- Lecture: Emotional intelligence (EI); how EI relates to authentic leadership and organizational effectiveness; the four EI competencies—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management; the skills and talents of each
- Break (5 minutes)
Emotional intelligence, climate, and leadership styles (55 minutes)
- Lecture: Group climate; how a manager or leader influences group climate; the relationship between climate and six common leadership styles; the six factors that influence an organization’s working environment and how managing them relates to performance; an overview of the six different leadership styles and their impact on climate; related EI competencies; the importance of practicing more than one or two
- Guided discussion: Examples of the leadership styles in action

Six leadership styles in practice (25 minutes)
- Lecture: Putting the six leadership styles into practice in your workplace; styles with a negative impact on climate—coercive and pacesetting; the most positive style—authoritative; three other positive styles—affiliative, democratic, and coaching
- Hands-on exercises: Determine when you currently use coercive and pacesetting styles and how you might adjust your use of them; determine how well you practice the authoritative style, your strengths in this area, and areas you could develop; determine if you currently practice any of the other positive styles and which you might add to your toolkit
