About your instructor

  • Susan Schoenfeld works with the Leaders Institute providing team-building programs for corporations. Susan has over 20 years of corporate experience. Previously, she was a professional development and performance management consultant at Baker & McKenzie, spent more than 11 years as professional development director at Foley & Lardner LLP, and was the training manager at Extendicare Health Services. Susan has taught courses at several universities, including Marquette University and UWM, and has provided customized coaching, seminars, strategic planning, and motivational speaking services to individuals, businesses, and community groups statewide. She has also taught several workshops to law firms and legal associations and has coached executives on management skills and presentation techniques. Some of her clients include Hyatt Corporation, Time Warner, and the National Association of Realtors. Susan is a certified DISC instructor and has authored articles for several professional journals.

Self-confidence and relaxation techniques (20 minutes)

Nonverbal communication when interacting with others (10 minutes)

  • Lecture: Territoriality; space; where and how you sit; eye contact during a conversation; hands talk

Characteristics of an effective speaker (15 minutes)

  • Lecture: Eye contact; appearance and dress; proper use of notes or materials; posture; gestures; movement; timing

Visual aids and PowerPoint (10 minutes)

  • Lecture and discussion: What makes a good visual for a speech

Vocal techniques (10 minutes)

  • Lecture: How to avoid vocal interference; breathing through the diaphragm; using a relaxed voice; articulation; variety; rate; pause
  • Hands-on activity: Try exercises such as breathing through the diaphragm

Preparing your presentation (10 minutes)

  • Lecture: Writing a formal outline; using note cards or bullets for PowerPoint; example outlines

Creating interest with stories (10 minutes)

  • Lecture: How to use personal stories to create interest
  • Hands-on exercise: Think of an event to use as a story in conversation

Writing and delivering an effective introduction and conclusion (10 minutes)

  • Lecture: How to create an effective introduction and conclusion
  • Hands-on exercise: Write a brief introduction to a speech on why you should take a class on presentation skills, using the principles from this course
