Spotlight on Cloud: Cloud FinOps & Cost Optimization
Bringing DevOps, finance, and the business together to master the unit economics of cloud with FinOps
Ten years ago, DevOps broke down the silos between engineering and ops and accelerated the pace of innovation. Today, a similar pattern is emerging where effective cloud infrastructure adoption and usage requires a deep collaboration between technical teams (DevOps) and their new partners in finance and business.
Join us for this edition of Spotlight on Cloud to find out how to create a strategy for managing your organization's cloud costs. Expert J.R. Storment shares strategies for scaling your cloud adoption by collaborating across operations, development, and finance to continuously optimize cloud spend, using an emerging practice known as FinOps.
FinOps is not just a not a framework or a workflow; it's a cultural shift that’s required to make informed choices about whether teams are focused on innovation, speed of delivery, or cost of service. You’ll explore the concept and learn a common lexicon that enables engineering/IT, finance, and business leadership to come together to make decisions about cost, speed, and quality. Some teams will be all in on one (“speed at all costs!”), while most will strike some balance of all three (“keep costs below 5% growth per month and try to move fast”). All will need to come together to keep their company competitive in the fastest moving technology era the world has ever seen.
O’Reilly Spotlight explores emerging business and technology topics and ideas through a series of one-hour interactive events. You’ll engage in a live conversation with experts, sharing your questions and ideas while hearing their unique perspectives, insights, fears, and predictions for the future.
In every edition of Spotlight on Cloud, you’ll learn about, discuss, and debate the complex, ever-evolving world of the cloud. Best of all, you’ll discover how successful companies have adopted and embraced this massive network of shared information and how you can follow their lead to transform your organization and prepare for the Next Economy.
What you'll learn-and how you can apply it
By the end of this live show, you’ll better understand:
- The anatomy of a cloud bill
- How to manage the variable spend model of cloud (a shift from CapEx to OpEx) by bringing alignment among IT, finance, and business stakeholders
- How to create a strategy (where there was none) for implementing a cloud cost governance program in your organization
- How to motivate engineering teams to take cost savings actions
- How to develop a reserved instance strategy at scale
This training course is for you because...
- You're a CTO, DevOps practitioner, software architect, or cloud manager who needs to better manage your cloud costs.
- Come with your questions for J.R. Storment
- Have a pen and paper handy to capture notes, insights, and inspiration
