I already have .NET and Cold Fusion programming skills so I was pretty curious about Python. It’s widely recognized as one of the most used programming language in modern big-data oriented environment. The book is very clear but also too basic for people that already have experience in other programming languages. Some concept must be already in readers’ background so it would be better to dig deeper on other aspects of Python. Full Review >

I came from SQL-oriented RDBMs so I was pretty curious about MongoDB. It’s widely recognized as one of the most interesting NoSQL DB. The book covers from common concepts and tasks to advanced techniques and approaches like replication, sharding, administration and data design. The material is not complicated at all and the examples are very clear and accurate. They show you really how to manage practical situations and needs. There is no SQL shell, but you can work directly with javascript through a dedicated shell. Javascript is the built-in programming language of Mongo, like PL/SQL is for Oracle relational databases or T-SQL of MS SQL Server. Full Review >

Getting Started with Impala

Getting Started with Impala

Interactive SQL for Apache Hadoop

Marco's rating: StarStarStarStarStar 5.0

This book introduces Impala SQL for Hadoop in a simple and crystal clear way. Impala is a modern, and yet very interesting new entry in the Hadoop ecosystem. Cloudera, by implementing Impala, provided a very useful layer to Hadoop. Impala makes SQL knowledge valuable again without having other low lever skills on Hadoop. SQL is already known to many data professionals coming to Hadoop from various platforms and DBMS and this layer helps those professionals to be ready and focused on real value of Big Data: producing Insights. To me the book reaches two important goals: first it's highly readable and concise, second it shows something under active development in a "stable" and "actionable" way. The author, to clearly point his view, provided in the book two main message: the first is why Impala implementation is a good news in Hadoop. Second: how to be ready with daily tasks and avoid pitfalls. Full Review >

Understand Your Data and Be More Productive

I didn’t use regex a lot before reading this book but I definitely need its powerful approach to manage string and text processing effectively. As I finished reading this book, I realized how many simple and complex tasks you can elegantly accomplish using regex. The book is exceptional. It takes you in a fantastic journey. The first three chapter make you handle wisely the basic regex techniques, then it move you forward opening your vision to the full power of this approach. The book manage the general as the specific stuffs in a very effective way. Therefore, the content and material is quite dense and the reader must deal with it by analyzing in small chunks. Applying Lean Principles to Improve User Experience

Marco's rating: StarStarStarStarStar 2.0

I had a lot of expectations on this topic because the user experience is where you see the wrecks even of the most ambitious projects. Unfortunately, I found that this book was less “lean” than his title. I’ve appreciated some interesting ideas but the title is misleading since the User Experience is more the collateral issue.
