Version Control with Subversion--New from O'Reilly: The Standard in Open Source Version Control

October 3, 2008

Version Control with Subversion Sebastopol, CA—One of the biggest frustrations in software development is version control: the art of managing changes to information. Version Control with Subversion, Second Edition (O'Reilly Media, $39.99), introduces the ideal versioning tool for managing a programming project or any other team-based task involving shared documents.

Written by members of the Subversion development team and updated for Subversion 1.5, this is the official guide and reference manual for the popular open source revision control technology.

Version Control with Subversion is useful for people from a wide variety of backgrounds, from those with no previous version control experience to experienced system administrators. This essential manual covers every aspect of installing, configuring, and using this open source technology.

Subversion is the perfect tool to track individual changes when several people collaborate on documentation or, particularly, software development projects. As a more powerful and flexible successor to the CVS revision control system, Subversion makes life so much simpler, allowing each team member to work separately and then merge source code changes into a single repository that keeps a record of each separate version.

With this updated edition, you will:

  • Understand the basic concepts behind version control
  • Learn Subversion's capabilities and workflow with a complete guided tour
  • Comprehend complex topics such as branching and merging
  • Master advanced features such as properties, externals definitions, and changelists
  • Receive step-by-step guidance on repository and server setup and administration
  • Discover context-sensitive tips for troubleshooting and get best practice recommendations
  • Get a complete reference to Subversion

If you've never used version control, this new edition has everything you need to get started. If you're a seasoned user of other version control systems, this book will help you make a painless transition to Subversion.

Mike has a degree in computer science and mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
