The book is a good reference to learn Android development, as a supplement to online references. You can develop an Android app just by going through forums, internet articles and most importantly Android Developers website. However, nothing beats having a book, at least for me. Full Review  >

I think Learning Android is a good book to learn how to develop an Android app. The book takes you through the step-by-step development of an Android App (a Twitter app)...starting out small and increasing the functionality and complexity of the app. As the book explains "...we'll add new features in small self-contained chunks and pull them back into the main project so that you can see how it fits together as a whole." I found it very helpful that at each "stopping point", the app always worked. Full Review  >

This is a fairly good book that will take you through your first steps on Android application development. It goes over key concepts like activities, services, intents and asynchronous tasks, explores the helpers and builders in Eclipse (but does not refrain itself from going into the XML when needed) and does so by going through the development of a simple application. I think the best way to go through this book is to follow along and build your own. If the book has any weak spot... Full Review  >

Learning Android by Marko Gargenta is a well-written guide for getting started developing Android applications. It is targeted at programmers that have some level of Java development experience, but you need not be a Java expert by any stretch to make good use of this book. As long has you have a fundamental understanding of Java programming, this book will serve as a great guide to developing Android applications. Full Review  >

This book is written for people having a reasonable experience with Java. I was able to breeze through this book in a couple of hours and "got it" what Android platform is about. Most of the book is about developing a Twitter App with each chapter taking the application gradually to the next level. Don't let that fool you. Full Review  >

Use of some of the features of mobile phones such as touch and the camera in applications is not covered but the book is about Android programming and it covers the fundamentals of the subject well. Learning Android is my first foray into learning native Android development. I was really taken aback by the style and structure of the book, as the author based each of the modules/chapters around a major project application, Twitter that you would create. He would then iteratively create a more improved version of the app, as you learn more and more things. I found this method to be a stellar way of learning, and something others should be doing, for other books and languages. Full Review  >

Learning Android is a very nice tour through developing Android applications. It's aimed at programmers who are comfortable with Java already, and doesn't waste any time getting into what's different about Android programming. If you're looking for a guide to save you a lot of time getting from "absolute Android beginner" to "comfortable consulting the API documentation on your own", I think Learning Android is quite a good choice.
