"JUNOS Cookbook": Time-Saving Techniques for JUNOS Software Configuration

Sebastopol, CA--Over the past decade, network service providers have been adding high-performance Juniper Networks routers to their networks to run their IP backbones. With the recent introduction of smaller routers with the same basic functions as the larger core routers, more people will be using Juniper Networks routers in their business networks and will need to learn how to configure and run the JUNOS software that runs on their routers.

The Juniper Networks routing platforms are becoming the go-to solution for core, edge, metro, and remote office networks, and JUNOS software is behind it all. Network support staff who are familiar with Cisco IOS or other routers will find the JUNOS software and the design of the router hardware similar to the other routers in some ways, but extremely different in many other ways. The operating system is so full of industrial-strength routing protocols and IP innovations that those treading into the world of JUNOS will need clarification, explanation, and a showcase example or two.

Yes, you can pore over the 5,000 pages of documentation or take a $2,000 training course, but JUNOS's sophistication can be baffling unless you know the shortcuts and tricks, and the rays of illuminating comprehension that can come only from those who live with it. That's where Aviva Garrett can help; she wrote the first JUNOS manual and then, as manager of Juniper Networks' technical publications, she led the effort from Version 1.0 until recently. She has now written JUNOS Cookbook (O'Reilly, US $54.99), which is certain to be an asset to anyone assigned the task of mastering JUNOS's intricacies.

Garrett explains her reasons for writing the book, "Juniper's customer base is expanding from telcos and service provides to more enterprise customers. There are many more enterprise customers (probably several orders of magnitude more) and they have less experience (or no experience) setting up routers of any kind, let along Juniper routers. I also felt there was a need to focus a lot on basic security features and best practices, which are important for all Juniper router users."

Writing the book was quite educational for Garrett. She says, "I learnt from writing the book that it's really hard to configure routers correctly, to get them to work, and that figuring out why things don't work can be really hard. I have a much greater respect now for the people who run networks." Fortunately, her new book makes it easier for the rest of the world.

JUNOS Cookbook is the first comprehensive book about JUNOS software. It provides more than two hundred timesaving, step-by-step techniques, and includes discussions about the processes and alternative ways to perform the same task. It has been tested and tech-reviewed by field engineers who know how to take JUNOS out for a spin, and it's applicable to the entire line of M-, T-, and J-series routers. JUNOS Cookbook covers:

  • Basic router configuration and file management
  • Security and access control
  • Logging, routing policy, and firewalling
  • Routing protocols from RIP to BGP and MPLS
  • VPNs and VPLS
  • IPv6
  • Anyone responsible for configuring and maintaining the JUNOS software will discover that JUNOS Cookbook pays for itself in no time by making the network easier to manage and update. If you work with Juniper routers, you need it on your desk.
