THE JPEG

The Joint Photographic Experts Group established the JPEG compression format in 1991. It is now the most common format for storing and sharing photographic images on the Web.

The JPEG uses ‘lossy’ compression. This compression technique reduces file size by discarding (losing) data. Often, a substantial amount of data can be discarded before the resulting degradation is noticeable by the user. Lossy compression is most commonly used to compress images, video and audio data. ‘Lossless’ compression is used for text and data files.
