In 2002, the American Society for Industrial Security surveyed over 130 firms and reported that more than 40 per cent had experienced actual or presumed losses of ‘trade secrets’ in the preceding year. In financial terms, it was estimated that the companies represented by the survey – Fortune 1000 companies and SMEs – would have made a whopping loss of more than $50 billion from exposed trade secrets or intellectual property theft.
